Microscopic analysis is key to the authentication of many types of antiquities but particularly ancient bronze. While many techniques typical of modern forgers and fakers can mimic the natural patinas of ancient objects when viewed with the naked eye, the complex processes that form natural patinas are in most cases impossible to reproduce short-term in a laboratory. Complex crystal structures form on the surface and literally “grow” out of the metal substrate. These images show some of the amazing sights typical on the surface of authentic ancient bronze.
